The musicians are not merely to entertain the others but our way trying to tell a story with sounds (Nels Cline)

Stories Before Within is the second album by Jason Kao Hwang's Edge. This assembly, whose debut album came in 2006, sounds amalgam of East and West in a strict balance.

In his compelling creative approach we can find a natural balance that contains the daring of jazz, the depth of chamber music, the exploratory profile of free improvisation and a rare pilgrimage traditional rhythms of Asia. But beyond the scope of this creative offer and rigorous implementation level, Jason Kao Hwang expressed in this project firm conceptual vocation to describe the reality of the world around him from an artistic perspective.

According to the radical constructivism, reality does not exist as an objective fact but a more fitting within the mental constructs that makes the person from the constant interaction with their environment. This leads us to interpret the description of this context requires equally subjective languages and is there precisely where appropriate and suitable emerges as the aesthetics of the art tool.

The writer Heinrich Wilhelm defined Wackenroder painting and music as artistic reducible to language concepts.

In his essay of two wonderful languages and its mysterious power he says: "Through the words dominate the world. The only thing that words can not express is invisible. "For Wackenroder, the language of the word does not capture the invisible and content because it is" the tomb of the deep passions of the heart. " From the perspective of those ideas, the place of music allows a fruitful understanding of the meaning of the world, bordering a strange coexistence of perpetual motion and impossible definition, between passion, chaos and sensuality. This view allows us to guess a line of thought that, like Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, sees music as the invisible face, but real and tangible, of "unsaid" that the world can offer.

On this album, Jason Kao Hwang adopts a narrative to describe that world, bypassing the conventional wisdom that requires the use of the word to access the abstract language of sounds. In the literary field, the narrator is responsible for counting or recounting events.
Which tells a story is not an accountant but a narrator, an accountant ... instead it is often us the story, which is not the same. Put another way: you create fantasies with other words and numbers ... Better not say more ...
The narrator is an entity within the story, different from the author who creates it. The narrative can control when the narrator states the ability to influence his own speech from a metanarrative or communicative level when trying to influence. You can also serideológica or testimonial, if it relates to their sources of information or express clearly the memories.

In this analogy between music and literature, Stories Before Within seems to tell a story from outside the world of the story and, rather than representing stories lived by the author / narrator, is an opportunity to express their thoughts, their life and their environment through an audio story. We could even assert that the narrative adopted here is heterodiegético character. Well defined concept in that famous book ... the libroooo ... that no one reads! A book…

A book is a collection of many sheets of paper, bound, form a volume; and there is one very famous is called ...

I do not want to insist on trivial details but the book to which I refer comes with many leaves and ... are well written! It llamaaaa ... Well ... what is important is what it says, so no need to add anything more.

It has a brown top.

Narrative Stories Before Within arrangement is evident in the title of the album; its cover shows an open book and the first paragraph of text in the booklet explicitly states: "When Jason Kao Hwang prepared the new work for his band Edge, was thinking of a story telling". These tracks strongly lead to creative raw material and this, in turn, translates into music.

The album opens with Cloud Call, composition inspired by a street festival in Ukraine
The violin Jason Kao Hwang draws in the air melodic, consistent path with his inspiration, who are gradually joining the rest of the instruments. From an early minimalism base structure, dynamics evolves naturally until a sequence of expressive and powerful rhythmic counterpoints fractures. A solid speech that links and brings together in one scenario creative lyrical folk Asian ethnicity represented on the violin and harmonica freedom characteristic of jazz played by the trumpet deTaylor Ho Bynum. An original invocation appearance irreconcilable elements that intertwine with ease, aided by the flexible and secure rhythmic propulsion Ken up the bass and drums Feliano Andrew Drury.

From East Sixth Street is a guided tour of the jazz tradition gathered on the Lower East Side of New York. Neighborhood that has been home to several generations of musicians associated with free improvisation, including Jason Kao Hwang. A spirited rhythmic pulse that supports and incorporates a subtle funky preaching is crossed by the avant-garde inherent angular lines, achieving confront a familiar and recognizable sound discourse with the simultaneous observation of a point located on the edge of musical experimentation. All wrapped in a harmonious fabric with large spaces for the development of their own, but where free improvisation does not act independently of the composition but as an integral part.

The musical journey of Walking Pictures gives us the feeling of crossing a photo album, in which each image appears to be a logical and defensible location. While all compositions Stories Before Within maintain a thematic link, here a climate of melodic introversion is developed in contrast to the celebratory nature of the foregoing matters. A healthy exercise alone camaraderie in an intense formal exchange allows roaming from ethereal fragments of introspection, with its epicenter in the blues, other expansive exuberance that focus on the swing. Kao Hwang, here on viola, and Jason out provocatively between harmonic map with planned precision. Taylor Ho Bynum makes the most flexibility in terms of timbre of the trumpet displaying a soft, delicate and enveloping attack. While constituting the tandem Andrew Drury and Ken Felianoaportan tension, strength and conviction to sound building.

Third Sight theme had already been included in Local Lingo, album duet with Jason Kao Hwangintegra kayagum teacher, Sang Won Park. The ethereal melodic beauty of Korean music reminiscent of the original, this version takes a heraldic and air jubilant fanfare character, no less charming. Taylor Ho Bynum notes as if they were throwing darts making center in white, while Drury and Feliano through abrupt changes in rhythm of remarkable vivacity, unify the spaces allocated to free improvisation with passages more attached to the score.

The album closes with the notable Embers. The violin describes a languid melody adorned with neoclassical substance sensitive sound of the trumpet, the ascetic contribution of drums and bass with refined textures arc. A moderate increase in elegiac character aquilatadas built on melodic solos and subtle variations, give this composition a sense of dramatic narrative. As tragic moments, in other sweet and melancholic but with an apparent ability to endure in the listener through time.

In the field of literature, the essence of a story is to tell the story without reflecting it in its entirety, compacting and emphasizing certain points that are often decisive for the development of the same, leaving the imagination of the reader task of composing the details that could be considered superfluous. Jason Kao Hwang took the same criterion the design and development of her album Stories Before Within; and in the same way, let your imagination left to the final conclusion of his musical story.

And it is appreciated.
